چکیده

Quantitatively determining the amount of chemical weathering within sedimentary rocks (and profiles) took a major step forward with creation index alteration (CIA) 40 years ago. The CIA relates proportion immobile aluminum to mobile cations calcium, sodium, and potassium is grounded in empirical modeled geochemical data for mineral reactions that occur during hydrolysis. However, should be applied cautiously because it one-dimensional value most complex situations, as clastic rocks, homogenizes compositional inputs source, weathering, sorting, diagenesis. Subsequently developed two-dimensional (2D) ternary diagrams (Al 2 O 3 –CaO * +Na O–K O; Al O+K O–FeO+MgO) permitted capacity explore mineralogical-geochemical pathways sets may separate those inputs, but interpreting complicated they differentiate group certain elements. Here we develop three-dimensional tetrahedral diagram O–FeO+MgO, A–CN–K–FM) incorporates same critical elements permits simultaneous assessment felsic mafic minerals on while retaining ability plagioclase from alkali feldspar monitor post-depositional changes. Using plot, show both positions 2D can generate potentially misleading interpretations without properly budgeting ferromagnesian components parallel. We first how tetrahedron works, then use numerous previously published examples identify competing shape composition source profiles, actively transporting sediment, paleosols, petrogenesis.

Microbially induced sedimentary structures in evaporite–siliciclastic sediments of Ras Gemsa sabkha, Red Sea Coast, Egypt

The coastal sabkha in Ras Gemsa, Red Sea coast with its colonizing microbial mats and biofilms was investigated. The sabkha sediments consist mainly of terrigenous siliciclastic material accompanied by the development of evaporites. Halite serves as a good conduit for light and reduces the effect of intensive harmful solar radiation, which allows microbial mats to survive and flourish. The micr...

Sedimentation and Sedimentary Rocks

Sedimentary rocks are one component of the modern threefold classification of rocks. They derive from the lithification of sediments, which are produced in basically two ways: by the mechanical deposition of grains derived from the alteration of other rocks (detrital or clastic rocks), or as chemical precipitates or grains formed organically or inorganically from an aqueous solution. The whole ...

Sorting out Compositional Trends in Sedimentary Rocks of the Bradbury Group (Aeolus Palus), Gale Crater, Mars

Sedimentary rocks are composed of detrital grains derived from source rocks, which are altered by chemical weathering, sorted during transport, and cemented during diagenesis. Fluvio-lacustrine sedimentary rocks of the Bradbury group, observed on the floor of Gale crater by the Curiosity rover during its first 860 sols, show trends in bulk chemistry that are consistent with sorting of mineral g...

Triple oxygen isotope variations in sedimentary rocks

Relatively large (P0.2&) O anomalies in the geologic record have been used to recognize atmospheric processes such as photochemical reactions and to trace changes in the partial pressures of O2 and CO2 in Earth’s atmosphere through time. However, recent oxygen isotope measurements of terrestrial rocks, minerals and waters also reveal common, smaller (but statistically significant) deviations fr...
